Communications Director

Reports to: Director General

Overview: Responsible for overseeing all matters relating to internal and external communications of the World Anti-Doping Agency, the international organization created by the sports movement and governments of the world to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against doping in sport. Includes executive level strategy; global identity and brand awareness; public, media and athlete relations; information resources; and day-to-day management of department (US$1.4 million). All activities performed in bilingual French/English environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Communications. Develop and implement strategic communications programs, driving cohesive messaging strategy across organization in line with agency’s strategic plan. Manage crises and issues communications. Foster network of communications specialists in anti-doping to expand understanding and delivery of programs and messages.

Public and Media Relations. Oversee all aspects of public and media relations. Lead media relations staff in the development of key messages and responses. Serve as spokesperson.

Athlete Outreach. Supervise staff responsible for delivering outreach and awareness programs at major international events and promoting implementation of outreach model by anti-doping and sports organizations. Develop WADA Athlete Committee into an effective representative of clean athletes who support anti-doping initiatives.

Information Resources. Manage the creation and maintenance of information and content to support communications strategies. Oversee the development of all public corporate materials, including agency magazine, annual reports, presentations, press releases, opinion pieces, position papers, public statements, chairman speeches, Web and digital content.

Other Responsibilities:

• Write editorials, op-eds and speeches on behalf of Agency’s president and director general for placement in national and international media

• Manage outside contractors such as designers and PR agencies

Qualifications:

• Perfectly bilingual: French and English

• Knowledge of languages a definite asset

• Undergraduate and graduate degrees in journalism, communications or related field.

• A minimum of 10 years experience in the field of communications and public relations, with particular emphasis in media relations and written communications. Experience with or within government an asset

• Excellent English writing and editing skills

• Interest in the field of doping in sport and sport in general

• Proven ability to manage staff

• Proven ability to manage budgets

• Experience in crisis communications

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Ability to speak before large audiences

• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

• Proven self-driven leadership
